The lyrics on this one have a special poignancy when you learn that Garcia was born 123 years to the day after Herman Melville, who wrote Moby-Dick. They are the same soul, Elijah, John the Baptist and Socrates. God did this to prove reincarnation and show how much control over the world he has. Same with the writer of the lyrics, who was actually born Robert Burns, and is the same Robert Burns who wrote Auld Lang Syne. I would argue that here again, between Barlow and Hunter, the Dead roundly defeated England in the lyrics department. Certainly Dylan too, although they played a lot of Dylan songs. I actually plagiarized a poem from Robert Hunter in high school, and turned it in to Barbara Johnson at Shawnee Mission East, and she didn't suspect a thing, she thought I was a genius.
