This is the sign in front of Shawnee Mission East high school at 75th street and Mission Road in suburban Kansas City. My senior year, I lived with my grandparents and did the year here. The very first time I skipped a class, they called the house during the same hour. I had landed in a different universe, one hostile to my whole way of life, but it was not nearly as bad as military school. In the spring, I had the idea to check and see if the sign was locked, and it wasn't, so I wrote down what was on the front and back, and played around with what I could make. Then I marched out there in second hour study hall and changed it. The first time I made it say: A JERRY HEMP DRIVE ONE BOWL 420 The second time I made it say: YO MAMAS A LOOSE HO My environmental science teacher, Mr. Heinz, told the class about it, he said "Your mother is a promiscuous woman of the night," he thought it was hilarious. The third time I made it say: ALWAYS STONED And after that, they left the sign blank for the rest of the year. I won. That's why I never grew up, I was always winning.
