Tom and I had a back-and-forth, I told him, you're living the life I hoped to lead when I was twenty. I don't have regrets, and my temperament is more suited to solitary work like writing, but if I had kept at it, I would have been a competent sideman who doesn't sing. But I wasn't writing songs and I just felt, after living in New York, you know what, there are a lot of good guitar players, better than me. Maybe switch to writing. Tom was asked what his favorite guitars he's ever played are, and I couldn't believe it, but when he read the question I said to myself "That D18 in Lawrence, Kansas." That's his favorite guitar too! The Lawrence D18! Swear to God.
