He wrote the best black character ever, without the slightest hint of condescension, no trace of being patronizing or any clouded motives. This has been remarked before, but it really was a masterstroke of genius. This guy Kunstler told me, I'm a much better novelist than poor Toole ever was, but I'd like to see him try that. A little humility goes a long way, if you don't want to end up looking like a fool.
