In this book you can read about the Church Committee hearings of the mid 1970s, during which it emerged that thousands of university professors and administrators were on the CIA payroll. "How many, exactly?" Congress asked. The CIA declined to answer, but the estimates were in the thousands and nothing was done to rectify the situation, so one may presume it prevails today.
