I was living in Greenwich Village with a girl who happened to be Jewish. We took a cab uptown with her friends, who also happened to be Jewish. When we arrived and paid, I said "I don't have any money." The cab driver, who was Muslim, turned around and looked at me like I was Jesus. "You don't have any money?" Later I heard a snide remark about "imagine being able to pay for goods and services."
Another story from New York, at that time I was pretentious enough to be into Finnegans Wake, so I went to the Finnegans Wake club. And I was literally told that I should move to Los Angeles.
