You have heard it said that ye shall not steal, but I tell you, if it's a used book and you're going to read it, or at least give it a go, it will be all right. My mom and I used to eat at a coffee shop/restaurant where they sold used books, and I would tease her, browsing the books and bringing one back to the table, and telling her "I think I'm going to steal this book."
Now I'm reaching far back in my cerebral library, but I think you might find a quote somewhere, from Gurdjieff, saying that it's ok to steal when it comes to knowledge. My mom was always disapproving of stealing books, of course she was never in the position to desire a used book she couldn't afford, but personally speaking, my preference would be, if you're actually going to at least make an honest attempt to read the book, and you're looking at just a few dollars anyway, you might be morally justified in taking the book. If you're like an aspiring author, or something. I did that a few times.
