This is one of those cultural delicacies that only a literary man could give you.
So I'm just going from memory here. P.G. Wodehouse and his wife rented a house on the French Riviera, next door to H.G. Wells. There's a letter from Wodehouse to a friend where he says, "I like Wells. An odd bird, though. He said to me, apropos of nothing, 'My grandfather was a professional cricketer.' Now if there's an answer to that, you tell me. I said, 'Mine had white whiskers.'"
